  • Research summary

There were an estimated 7% of the UK population requiring ongoing NHS wound care in 2017 /2018. Over 30% of wounds remained unhealed which has significant cost implications for the NHS and has a negative impact on the health and wellbeing of patients. Delayed wound healing can happen when wounds are not measurement accurately and wounds which need urgent treatment are not identified in good time. The use of digital applications is recommended as part of standard NHS care. However, clinical facing digital Apps have not been thoroughly tested in patients with complex wounds or in different types of care settings.

This research sets out to test whether an wound care digital 'App' is feasibility to introduce into various NHS care settings, if the APP is acceptable to staff and patients and if there are potential benefits to using the App such as improved communication and early identification of non-healing wounds leading to referrals to specialist services.

In this study we will recruit adult patients receiving chronic wound care from nurses across primary, secondary and community care within the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire integrated Care System.

Participants will receive usual care in accordance with National Wound Care pathways plus assessment using the App.

Patients will be invited to participate over a 2 month period and will remain in the study for 10 weeks. We will ask patients and clinicians to answer questions about their experience of using and receiving care with the App and access medical records to assess other outcomes such as healing times and number of admissions and NHS appointments.
