  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to evaluate the usability of the mOm incubator. The study will seek to qualitatively evaluate intuitiveness and ease of use. Participants will be asked to complete/simulate tasks related to the set-up, normal use and cleaning of the incubator.
Participants must be NHS Staff that have experience using and/or cleaning neonatal incubators:
    • Midwives
    • Neonatal aides
    • Neonatal Nurses
    • Neonatal physicians
    • Other, if appropriate experience

There will be two arms to the research, participants will be allocated to one of the arms randomly.

The first arm will involve participants being asked to complete tasks without instruction, with prompts given only as required, hence focusing the usability observations on the design intuitiveness.

The second arm of the study will involve the participants being given demonstrations before being asked to complete the same set of tasks, hence focusing the usability observations on the design functionality. After each set of tasks, the participant will be asked questions relating to their experience with the incubator up to that point.

Each observation session will be filmed with the consent of the participants; all footage will be anonymized by filming only from the neck down with cameras pointed at the incubator rather than the individual; all participants will where a lab coat to further prevent identification.

The aim is to collect observational data from at least 14 participants over a three-day period. Each observational session is expected to take approximately 30 minutes.
