Research summary
In the MOLL Study, we are evaluating excision of breast tumours using a hand-held magnetometer to identify a shortened version of the standard guided-wire for breast lesion localization. We will recruit patients diagnosed with early breast cancer, who are suitable for wide local excision (WLE). The patient will be invited to undergo localization of the tumour using a shortened version of the gold standard wire (inserted into the tumour under local anaesthetic and with ultrasound guidance as standard) on the morning or day prior to surgery at the Radiology Department. This will be instead of the standard wire used to localise breast tumours which will no longer be required. During the surgery, the surgeon will use a hand-held magnetometer to detect the shortened wire (magnetic marker) and excise the whole tumour. The surgery will be undertaken as usual and the standard x-ray of the excised tissue will also be performed as standard. This will confirm that the magnetic marker has been removed.
