Research summary
Primary care clinicians have lots of clinical questions when consulting with patients (for example, what is the best treatment for pain), but many go unanswered. Lots of resources have been created by the NHS and other public funding sources to help, but it seems that many are not well used in primary care. Other research finds this is because they don't tend to answer the questions that primary care staff have about clinical care. This means there is a mismatch between what is being made to help, and what staff need. We want to know where staff are currently looking for and finding information. We will approach general practices in Fife and ask if the staff are willing to help. We will ask individual clinicians if we can have access to their browser history over a week, either by print out, or via sending in an email. This will allow us to identify searches used for clinical questions over a week. We will rate popular resources for accuracy and interview clinical staff to get their view on what kind of information helps them with clinical care. We will also send a questionnaire to clinical staff in Scotland and England and Scotland and Northern Ireland, and ask what resources they commonly use and prefer. Participants will be invited by letter, and the information sheet will be sent out with time to consider and ask questions before asked to consent.
