Research summary
Asthma is one of the most common diseases affecting more than 300 million people worldwide. Diagnosis of asthma is based on the symptoms and evidence of variable airflow limitation that is reversible. There are many guidelines to aid the diagnosis of asthma; NICE, GINA, BTS/SIGN, ERS, etc. These guidelines differ slightly on the criteria needed to diagnose asthma. Current guidelines also do not include impulse oscillometry (IOS) as an objective test for asthma, but studies show evidence that changes in respiratory function can be identified through IOS. However, there are limited studies on the applicability and diagnostic utility of IOS in adult asthmatic patients.
This study aims to investigate the efficacy of diagnostic tests in the diagnosis of asthma, with reference to international asthma guidelines for diagnosis in the real world. This will be accomplished using a cohort of patients referred to the severe asthma service at the Queen Alexandra Hospital (QAH), Portsmouth. The study will also investigate the diagnostic utility of IOS in comparison with other lung function indices.REC name
