Research summary
Bowel cancer cases and deaths are higher in people who are poor compared to those who are rich. In the English Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, uptake of both screening and follow-up is lower in poorer people. It is likely that the health differences between poor and rich people have been made worse by bowel cancer screening. Strategies to improve bowel cancer health outcomes in poor people are needed to reduce this health gap. The aim of this project is to use a computer model to calculate the effect of the English Bowel Cancer Screening Programme on the health gap between rich and poor people, and then to work out the best and most value for money way to reduce that health gap by comparing different ways of encouraging poor people to attend screening.
