  • Research summary

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. With advances in surgery, more and more patients are undergoing prostate removal using a robot. Research so far demonstrates patients have significant unmet needs including psychosexual care. Psychosexual care means care to support to having a healthy sexual life and addressing sexual problems including emotional issues. This is lacking in the current environment for patients after their surgery. There are a number of ways this can be managed. Psychosexual care may be addressed via a model of care. The best way to develop this is by patients, healthcare professionals, and researchers working together.

Research conducted already will be reviewed as part of this study. To further develop the model, patient views on psychosexual needs and current psychosexual care will be taken into account. This is so researchers gain an understanding of what patients want. Patients’ decision for a ‘ best’ model of psychosexual care will also be explored.. This information will be used to develop a model of care with and healthcare professional views.

To do this, researchers will conduct two focus groups with patients and interviews with healthcare professionals. This is important to do, as the best care and pathway is better developed by patients, based on what they require and need. When research has been conducted previously, this demonstrated currently the psychosexual needs of patients are not being addressed. This study aims to correct that. This will use patient experience and perception to create a patient driven model of care. This can then be put into use for current patients.
