  • Research summary

This study proposes to investigate the preparations for, and operation of the Nightingale hospital, located at the University of West of England (UWE), Bristol, being set up in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This study adopts an inductive, qualitative approach. Participants of this research will be staff working at, or supporting the operation of the Nightingale hospital. Patients will not be included within this study. Data will be collected remotely by the research team, to maximise virus control, and minimise risk to the research team and NHS staff. Data collection will include the use of interviews with NHS employees, diaries written by employees, and the provision of documentation (archival material) by the NHS. This data will be used to understand, in real time, the decision-making and actions undertaken by NHS employees within the hospital, in order to assess clinical management and health and care delivery. Particular attention within this research will be paid to when operations are required to deviate from planned operations and/or expectations, and how these deviations are managed, and how unexpected issues are overcome.\n\nBy looking at the real time pandemic response involved with setting up, launching, and maintaining a Nightingale hospital, for the duration of its operation, this study aims to investigate how the decision making and actions undertaken within the NHS activates a resilient organisational response to the adverse conditions caused by an influenza pandemic. By observing deviations from plans and expectations, this research aims to qualitatively capture whether the hospital is able to maintain a resilient organisational response, and the processes they use to enable this response. The goal of this research is to identify strengths of implementation and resource deployment of the Nightingale hospital, as well as potential weaknesses. This research aims to contribute to the NHS’s future capacity for handling similar situations.\n
