Research summary
The evidence supporting links between prenatal and early years exposure to air pollution and health challenges later in life has strengthened in recent years. The GSTT catchment area for maternity care incorporates areas/postcodes amongst the most polluted in the UK. Furthermore, individual behaviours of residents combined with building characteristics can strongly influence how much air pollution individuals are exposed to in the home. While targeted advice to reduce exposure to air pollution is recognized as a potential health protection measure, robust real-world studies into their effectiveness is currently lacking, as recently highlighted by the WHO.
This study will focus on a more vulnerable subgroup of the wider population - pregnant women. We will assess their exposures and provide mitigation advice to improve air quality and reduce exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and in the first few weeks of their child’s life. This pilot phase of the study will gather qualitative and quantitative evidence to establish the feasibility and design of a future randomised control trial (RCT) evaluating the impact of reduced exposure to air pollution on birth outcomes, and the health of pregnant women and their babies.
