  • Research summary

Cancer patients suffer from fatigue and lassitude both as a result of their disease as well as the treatment they receive. Documenting the amount of physical activity during a three week period will provide data that may help to produce better outcomes for these patients.
Our project would use FitBit activity monitors to measure the number of active minutes individual cancer patients spend per day during and immediately after a course of chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
The FitBit Zip is a small digital activity tracker with a 6 month battery life. This means it does not require recharging by patients or staff. It is unobtrusive, being smaller than a 50p coin and can be worn over or under clothes as well as being shower proof. It uses Bluetooth to communicate with smartphones or tablet computers. It can be used with the proprietary FitBit app but the data is not then accessible for storage and analyses. However FitBit allow the data stored in the cloud to be intercepted and incorporated into a bespoke app to allow accurate data analyses, by approved software developers.
As it can store large quantities of data between downloads, patients will be able to bring the Fitbit back to clinic with them every few weeks when the data will be downloaded by Bluetooth
A unique and bespoke software application will be created by the Company Oxford Medical Intelligence (OMI), to enhance the extraction of data. Dr Philip Camilleri is a company director of OMI.
