Research summary
Biobanks are invaluable sources of large amounts of clinical data linked to health records and in recent years we have seen the emergence of a number of large scale national, regional and specialist biobanks in the UK and elsewhere.
In an international context each biobank has markedly different aims, operational arrangements and regulatory regimes. An important feature in common however, is the requirement that a selected sample population donate tissue and make available health and other information about themselves to be used by multiple unspecified research projects.
In order for a biobanks to become a valuable reservoir of relevant information large numbers of participants from all racial and ethnic backgrounds need to be recruited. While ethnicity has also been shown to broadly influence willingness to participate in genetic research the specific impact of ancestry on biobanking participation is unclear. Furthermore, attitudes to the donation of waste surgical tissue, often required for musculoskeletal biobanks, may differ to banking of blood samples and be influenced by ethnicity.
It has, therefore, become crucial to understand patients’ motives for agreeing to participate in clinical research in general, and to further examine their perspectives when considering participation in musculoskeletal research. This will enable the quality and diversity of tissue samples needed for future research and assist the development of clinical applications usable for all.
The aim of this study is to explore factors influencing widespread participation in musculoskeletal tissue biobanking.REC name
