Research summary
Aim: This study will explore whether we can collect consistent information about the impact of NHS speech and language therapy for children who have difficulties with their speech. If we can, then a follow-on study will collect data from all seven NHS Health Boards in Wales and use that to determine which is the best way to provide speech and language therapy for children with speech problems.
Background: Every year around 50,000 children with speech problems are referred to NHS speech and language therapy. The therapy these children receive varies, and we do not yet know what works best. We have already worked with speech and language therapists, young people, parents, and carers to develop a Core Outcome Set. This is an agreed list of things to measure before and after therapy to show what changes have taken place in a child’s speech. It includes the number of sounds that the child uses correctly and parent/carer views on how easy they are to understand. Now that we have an agreed list, the next stage is to test whether we can collect this information in real-life settings with children in Wales.
Design and methods: We will develop a process for the Core Outcome Set data to be collected. We will also meet with NHS speech and language therapists in Wales to discuss what might make it difficult for them to collect the data as well as what would make it easier. We will start the process of collecting the data from these services to determine if it would be feasible to collect this data on a large number of children (this is the work we would do in the follow-on study).
