Research summary
The pouch procedure is a complex operation for patients with ulcerative colitis when medicines do not work. Quality of life of patients with pouches depends on the pouch working well in the future. The pouch not working well may be determined by a leak of bowel content from the join used to create a pouch. The aim of this study is to reduce leakage at one year from the join with a number of interventions such as improving diagnosis of leaks, improved preparation with antibiotics before surgery, improved operative technique and better and quicker management to close leaks. We do this to improve the long-term quality of life for these patients after the pouch procedure.
