Research summary
People with cancer often suffer from weight loss (cachexia), with progressive fatigue and weakness, to the detriment of their quality of life. In addition, weight loss may compromise their immune system and prevent them from benefiting from treatment designed to activate an immune response to fight cancer. However, the underlying cause of weight loss in people with cancer is poorly understood. The aim of this study is to understand the mechanisms underlying weight loss in people with non-haematological cancers (any type of cancer apart from cancers of the blood such as leukaemia or lymphoma). It will investigate changes to metabolism and the immune system. This will help to facilitate future research to generate treatments to reverse weight loss and improve outcomes
40 evaluable patients with cancer will be recruited, this includes 20 who are losing weight and 20 who are not losing weight. Up to 20 healthy volunteers will also be recruited to act as a control group. The study will be performed at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
Participants with cancer will be asked to attend visits for screening, baseline, 2 study days (including an overnight stay), follow-up and end of study.
Healthy volunteers will be allocated into 2 groups (A or B). Volunteers will be asked to attend visits for baseline and for 2 study days. Group A also have an overnight stay in hospital.
Clinical assessments depend on the participant, but may include, vital signs, weight, height, body measurements, physical exam, indirect calorimetry, DXA scan, blood, urine and saliva sample collection, computer assessments and diaries.
