  • Research summary

The aim of this feasibility study is to evaluate the efficacy of meditation-based therapies on measures of sleep for people with chronic insomnia.

In the present randomised-controlled trial, participants will be allocated to 8-weeks of mindfulness training or 8-weeks of self-monitoring. Primary end points will be sleep efficiency derived from sleep diaries and the secondary end points ISI scores and actigraphy determined sleep time. Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) is a brief instrument that was designed to assess the severity of both nighttime and daytime components of insomnia.

Eligible participants will be those aged 18+ who meet research diagnostic criteria for an insomnia disorder. Participants will be recruited through referrals to Guy’s Hospital Sleep Disorders Centre.

Mindfulness training will be delivered online through an application called Headspace. Headspace is a digital health platform providing guided meditation sessions that are straightforward and non-religious. Participants can access Headspace on a mobile phone, tablet, or desktop computer. The mindfulness treatment consists of practicing meditation for 10 minutes daily for 8 consecutive weeks. The self-monitoring condition consists of self-monitoring using daily sleep/wake diaries for the duration of the study.

Questionnaires will be administered online at baseline and after the 8 week intervention. Actigraphy determined sleep time will be assessed at Guy's Hospital Sleep Disorders Centre.
