Research summary
Structured diabetes education is crucial in empowering people living with diabetes in successful lifelong management of the condition. However, most people living with type 2 diabetes do not attend structured educational courses. Additionally, the current educational courses focus on information provision, rather than teaching skills and facilitating change. We will test feasibility of a new diabetes educational course that incorporates mindfulness elements throughout its structure. We will also look at the impact this course has on outcomes, such as diabetes distress, knowledge of diabetes and blood sugar levels. Anyone living with type 2 diabetes who is a patient registered with University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire Trust will be eligible to take part in this study. The new course will be delivered remotely and will consist of 5 sessions. We will assess outcomes immediately after, 3 months and 6 months after the end of the course. We will invite some participants to semi-structured interviews to understand what they thought of the course and how it can be improved.
