Research summary
There is a growing body of research which suggests that there is a relationship between parenting and child physical and psychological health. Research suggest a number of important factors within this relationship such as parenting behaviour, the quality of the attachment relationship and levels of parental stress. However, mindful parenting is also gaining increased attention in research and studies have already demonstrated an association between higher levels of mindful parenting and better child well-being in relation to type one diabetes. This study aims to explore the relationship between mindful parenting and child well-being in relation to chronic pain in children aged 11 years and older. Children and their primary caregiver will be invited to complete a series of questionnaires regarding pain related characteristics (such as location of pain), quality of parent-child relationship, mindfulness in parenting, parental distress and parental behaviour in response to their child's pain. Data will be analysed using linear regression to test interactions between variables. If correlations are found, moderation analyses will take place. If hypotheses are confirmed, this study will provide further understanding of the experiences of families of children with chronic pain and provide further evidence in support of investigating the efficacy of mindful parenting interventions.
