  • Research summary

The aim of MILLENIA is to find out the best way for midwives to care for women who are pregnant or recently had a baby and have two or more long-term health conditions.
Around 20% of pregnant women in the UK have two or more physical health conditions (such as diabetes or raised blood pressure) or mental health conditions (like anxiety or depression) before pregnancy. These women often have lots of appointments with different healthcare professionals during pregnancy.
We do not know how these women feel about the care they get from midwives, want their care to be, or how they would like midwives and different healthcare professionals to work together to provide the best and safest care for them.
The MILLENIA study is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, it will be undertaken in maternity units in London, Newcastle and Lancashire from June 2025 to April 2027.
We will interview a) up to 20 pregnant/postnatal women with two or more long-term conditions about their experience of care by midwives and other health professionals and b) interview up to 20 midwives and other maternity healthcare professionals about their experience of working together to care for women with two or more long-term conditions.
Using what we learn from the interviews and the quantitative work which is part of a wider PhD study, we will work with women with two or more long-term conditions, organisations that support them and healthcare professionals who look after them to suggest ways to improve care.
The study will be guided throughout by a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement group made up of women who have experienced pregnancy with two or more long-term health conditions.
