Research summary
Saccrococcygeal teratomas (SCT's) are rare congenital tumours that can present in the neonatal period or in childhood. The treatment for them is surgical resection. Following surgery we follow them up initially 3 monthly with serial AFP's (tumour marker) and ultrasound scans for the first year, then 6 monthly for the second year - again with AFP's and and ultrasound scan. Following this they are seen once a year with an annual AFP and USS until the age of 5. Children with a malignant diagnosis are refered to the oncology team for treatment. Children that develop bowel or bladder The most widely used incision is a "chevron" incision. This leads to a degree of deformity of the buttock with a large irregular scar. In our institution we favour a midline saggital incision - we believe it gives the same functional outcome and provides better cosmetic outcome for the patient with a lesser degree of buttock deformity. All children who have had a SCT excised either at Booth Hall or Royal Manchester Children's Hospital will be invited to take part in the study. The parents and children will be invited to complete a questionnaire regarding the cosmetic appearance of their scar - this will be conducted in their home or the out patient department. A photograph will be taken of the scar - again in the outpatient department. Surgeons will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the cosmetic acceptability of the scar.
