Research summary
Patients with long-lasting history of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, will be recruited with the purpose of quantifying plasma levels of main micronutrients, such as, calcium, phosphate, magnesium, iron, zinc, vitamin A, thiamine, vitamin B9, vitamin B12, vitamin D, vitamin C and vitamin K, using results from blood tests. The participants will also receive a questionnaire, which aims to identify the main signs and symptoms of micronutrient deficiency and patients will be ask to provide a diet diary of 3 days to quantify an average intake. Albumin and pre-albumin will also be assessed as predictors of some medical complications that could be related to these conditions. Patients will be divided into 2 groups, the first group of patients with an ongoing history over 10 years of the condition and the second group, those with short history, describe as less than 5 years, will be tested as a control group. The results will be analysed by qualitative and quantitative methods, in order to establish appropriate data to assist and help improving the development of adequate treatment of patients with severe and enduring anorexia and bulimia nervosa.
