Research summary
The aim of the study is to understand the importance of different metals in the red cells of patients with sickle cell disease and other types of anaemia. The study will use anonymised left over blood when samples have been taken for clinical tests, and so no extra blood tests will be necessary. The blood will be analysed using a technique called metallomics which measures 10 or more different metals found in red cells. The results will be compared in patients with different types of anaemia and on different treatments to understand more about factors which damage red cells and cause anaemia and other complications. It may suggest new causes of anaemia and indicate new treatment approaches.
