Research summary
This study is seeking to establish knowledge and understanding of specific intra-plaque culprits that have contributed toward acute plaque rupture. In addition it may uncover novel biomarkers as predictors of plaque rupture. Atherosclerosis is a long term condition where fatty material (plaques) builds up on the inner walls of arteries causing blockages. Blockage of the blood vessels of the heart (coronary arteries) can lead to problems such as angina and heart attacks. We are trying to understand why these plaques sometimes rupture which may cause a heart attack (acute coronary syndrome). We wish to know more about why these plaques rupture. One way of doing this is to record information about patients that are diagnosed with angina and compare this to patients with acute coronary syndromes. As part of this study we will store simple information about participants, such participant’s age, the treatments that patients have had including whether they have been hospitalized and will collect some blood and urine samples at specific time points. The results will be entered into a secure database which will help us understand the condition better. Participants will not personally receive any financial benefit from taking part in the research.
