Research summary
Research Summary
Intensive care acquired weakness significantly increases mortality and morbidity and one risk factor is administration of corticosteroids, which are known to cause proximal muscle wasting. This is an observational study aiming to recruit 60 patients over a 2 year period from patients with either Cushing's syndrome secondary to adrenal tumours or phaeochromocytoma admitted for elective surgery without pre-existing neuromuscular conditions. The aim is to identify determinants of 'good and bad' muscle phenotypes at diagnosis and following treatment. Patients will be assessed with an intra-operative muscle biopsy, ultrasound imaging of muscle, urine and blood sampling, fat free mass index and strength/functionality scores.
Summary of Results
The study was suspended after the recruitment of one patient owing to health issues suffered by the responsible fellow. Sadly, I was unable to find a replacement and so the study was terminated.
The single study participant was not seen again after the initial contact with the fellow, so there were no data generated and no muscle biopsy was taken at the patient's surgery.REC name
