  • Research summary

The main aim of this research is to qualitatively explore how the welfare reform agenda and austerity measures are affecting working age patients whom are identified as single homeless and mentally unwell. The research will be conducted by carrying out semi structured interviews with mentally ill homeless patients and the staff whom support them. The patients will be treated either in an acute mental health unit or in a community team.
    The Research main objectives are:
    • To explore how working age homeless mental health patients whom are being treated either in an acute mental health unit or in the community, experience the welfare reform agenda and austerity, i.e. claiming benefit and accessing services from the local authority.
    • Exploring how staff whom are working with mental health patients experience working within and delivering services under the welfare reform agenda and implemented austerity measures.
    • To understand how a range of government policies and strategies implemented since the welfare reform agenda and austerity measures began have impacted on the health and wellbeing of mentally ill homeless patients.
    • To develop a theoretical framework on the impact of welfare reform and austerity measures for working age, single homeless mental health patients.
    • To identify good practice and make recommendations based on these.
