Research summary
The design research intends to inform the development of two mental health patient rooms in emergency department (ED) of Charing Cross Hospital (CXH). The hospital has received funding for renovation from the Department of Health in 2018 to improve the facilities within the ED to support the revised S136 pathways (including those with learning disabilities who can find visits to EDs distressing).
Thus, the primary aim for the qualitative research, which evaluation and analysis of MH patients’ experience in ED, would hope to uncovers common themes and identify specific environmental stressors in ED where effective improvements can be made or stressors mitigated through design. The result of such will inform the design proposal for the mental health facilities in the ED, which will be presented to the hospital.
The qualitative study will be for academic purpose and will be carried out from the end of 2018 to June 2019. The study is based on a Mixed Methods Research framework, based on the Constructive Grounded Theory and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. It studies and analysis user experiences of the built environment in ED and focuses on participants with a direct or lived experience of Charing Cross Hospital ED. Participants are recruited via critical case sampling.REC name
