Research summary
Background:
In recent years, men’s mental health is being promoted more widely in recognition of the growing need for services to adapt their way of working with men to improve engagement. Though forensic mental health services have evolved to accommodate the needs of female offenders, the same attention has not been given to the unique experiences of men and how this might impact upon their psychological rehabilitation.Aim:
The study aims to explore male offenders’ experiences of psychological therapy in a forensic mental health setting.Design:
A qualitative study design will be employed to gain a better understanding of men’s experiences of psychological therapy using semi-structured interviews. An Interpretative Phenomenological Approach (IPA) will be employed to analyse the data. This method can facilitate the analysis of smaller samples of data and has been specifically designed to understand individuals’ ‘lived experience’.Participant Recruitment:
Participants will be recruited from two medium-secure hospitals in Birmingham. Those who meet the inclusion criteria will be invited to take part in the study. Individuals who express an interest will be provided with an information sheet. They will then be approached by the chief investigator to discuss the research and raise any queries. The chief investigator will provide the individuals with contact details so they may get in touch if needed.Inclusion criteria:
• Aged 18 years or over
• Six face-to-face contacts with psychology
• Under the care of a forensic mental health teamProcedure:
Those who choose to take part will be reminded of the research process and their right to withdraw before signing a written consent form. Following this, a semi-structured interview will take place which will last between 45 and 60 minutes. The interviews will be audio recorded. The data collected will be transcribed in-verbatim. Findings from the analysis will be shared with the participants.REC name
