Research summary
Cachexia is when a person progressively loses weight, experiences diminished appetite/food intake and decreased physical function. A large trial of a new intervention to prevent and treat cachexia by giving patients simple exercise advice, nutritional supplements and anti-inflammatory medication is underway. Pilot work of the intervention has identified that it is achievable but has challenges relating to compliance. This study aims to understand what it is like for the patients, how they feel about the intervention, how this affects their overall well-being, not just their physical health. Overall we want to explore how acceptable they think each part of the intervention is and the intervention as a whole it. We want to understand how it may or may not fit with an individuals life and circumstances. An experienced qualitative researcher will speak to 25 patients who have completed the six week intervention. Interviews will be face to face about their experiences of the trial and will identify themes within the sample.
