Research summary
Melanoma is the leading cause of skin cancer deaths in the UK. The NIHR-funded 5 year MelaTools programme has the overall aim of improving the timely diagnosis of melanoma by developing electronic tools to help patients monitor changes in moles over time and GPs to make prompt and appropriate management decisions.
The MelaTools-Apps study aims to recruit people to complete a 3 month study of the usability and functionality of readily available skin monitoring Apps found on the Apple App Store. All individuals over the age of 18 with an iPhone 4 or newer will be eligible to participate. The study will be conducted in two GP practices in mid-Essex. Poster advertisements will be put up in the practices and the study information will be placed on the practices websites. On completion of an initial risk assessment tool for melanoma (used previously within the MelaTools programme in the MelaTools- Q study), individuals who are at above population risk of melanoma will be invited to take part in a workshop and asked to use the Apps for 3 months. They will also complete a diary after one and two months on the usability of the Apps and participate in a qualitative interview at the end of the 3 month study period.
