Research summary
The overall objective of IMPACCT is to a) reduce the extent of cancer-related pain and related distress and b) facilitate patients with cancer remaining at home by reducing pain-related hospital admissions. The over arching programme, of which this is part, has secured funding from the National Institute of Health research (NIHR) via a programme grant.
This application relates to the pharmacy-based interventions part of the study. This aims to model methods of enhanced communication between pharmacies and members of primary care and palliative care teams, examine continuity of pharmacy use and model a Medicines Use Review for patients with cancer pain and their carers. To do this we will carry out a semi-structured interview with 20 cancer pain patients and their carers. We will identify these patients through surgery staff accessing Gold Standards registers at recruited surgeries. We will explore views on medication use, continuity of pharmacy use and experience, acceptance and needs from pharmacy services.
This information will then be used, alongside a multi-stakeholder workshop, to design a service adapted from the established Medicines Use Review (MUR) template to specifically help patients with advanced cancer pain. From the interviews and workshop we will also design a hand-held pain medicines record for patients to carry between care settings to provide information to health-care professionals about previous and current care, symptoms and useful contacts.
The service and pain medicines record will be tested in 10 local pharmacies and feedback of patients, carers and professionals involved will be sought to assess its feasibilityREC name
