Research summary
The aim of the proposed study is to investigate changes in index study children’s smoking-related health problems and service use before and after the smoke-free homes intervention, compared between intervention and usual care group. In particular, we will measure the number of new diagnoses of and consultations (including referrals to secondary care) for smoking-related conditions (specifically lower respiratory tract infections, middle ear disease, wheezing and exacerbation of asthma) and the number and doses of prescriptions (antibiotics, asthma medications, antihistamines, other medicines) before and after participation in the study. We also see a substantial opportunity to re-measure air quality in participant’s homes, and also to conduct a survey to gather participants own views regarding the intervention and their own smoking behaviours since taking part in the original trial. These data will enable us to understand the clinical impact our intervention may have had, in addition to the environmental and behavioural outcomes explored in the original trial.
