Research summary
This study will look at the relationships between psychosocial factors (such as perceptions of social support, conceptions of self and illness, self-compassion, and health-related anxiety) and depression in people with Multiple Sclerosis. It also aims to look at the role of mental defeat in this relationship.
Participants will predominantly be recruited from the a Community Neuro and Stroke Service. Participants will also be recruited from third-sector organisations. Participants will be eligible if they have a diagnosis of MS. They will be unable to take part if they have cognitive or severe visual difficulties, a comorbid neurological disorder, a diagnosis of personality disorder, or are currently misusing drugs/alcohol.
Participants will be invited to complete postal or online questionnaires examining the above factors. They will also be invited to take part in a short interview, which looks to further explore these factors and their relationship with depression. Participants can take part in the first stage of the study without taking part in the second. Participants will be reimbursed for their time with an Amazon voucher. We are aiming to recruit approximately 68 participants for the first part of the study and 12 for the second part.
Results of this study should offer implications for the development of more effective interventions for depression in people with MS.
