Research summary
This is an observational study where by we will try and to identify the different ways of assessing sarcopaenia (the loss of muscle mass and function) in three different sets of patient groups who are all affected by an inflammatory condition. The three patients groups will have one of the following conditions; liver cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel disease or inflammatory arthritis. We will measure the degree of sarcopaenia by the following assessments; functional testing (using equipment to measure upper leg strength and physical activity via a wrist monitor), anthropometric (human body composition) testing (using hand grip strength, measurements of the upper arm, and using a non invasive equipment that measures body fat and muscle composition from weight, height and grip strength), blood, stool and urine testing, imaging scans (MRI and ultrasound) that will identify the fat and muscle composition of the upper leg, upper leg muscle biopsy and quality of life questionnaires to determine how the physical aspects compare with social, functional and psychological aspects, over a specific period of time, before and after treatment for the underlying condition.
