  • Research summary

A better understanding of the epigenetic changes in skeletal muscle that are associated with obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic risk and how these are influenced by exercise may facilitate the development of more effective prevention strategies for diabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction. The Hertfordshire Physical Activity Trial offers a unique opportunity to take a systems epidemiology approach to examine the influence of a structured aerobic exercise intervention on skeletal muscle DNA methylation and gene expression, because of its large size, randomised controlled study design and detailed anthropometric and metabolic phenotyping of study participants.
