Research summary
This is a pilot investigation into the potential of using reticulocyte parameters as measured by the Sysmex XN series automated full blood count analyser, in order to assess iron sufficiency in the haemodialysis population at the Royal Derby Hospital (RDH).
It will involve reticulocyte testing on a random sample of ‘normal’ patients and a random sample of ‘haemodialysis’ (or study group) patients in order to;
• Develop a local reference range for extended reticulocyte parameters
• Assess the correlation of reticulocyte parameters to Haemoglobin (Hb) level.
• Assess the correlation of reticulocyte parameters to Ferritin level.
• Identify the numbers of patients that appear ‘functionally iron deficient’.
• Assess if any of the reticulocyte parameters give a ‘significant’ difference in identifying iron deficiency compared to Ferritin measurements.If successful, this study could lead to a more in-depth study into the use of reticulocyte parameters as a monitoring tool to optimise the use of erythropoietin in patients with renal insufficiency.
