Research summary
Jaundice is often characterised by the yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes (sclera) due to elevated blood bilirubin levels. Bilirubin is an orange-yellow pigment formed by the breakdown of red blood cells. Jaundice can indicate serious health issues, including liver disease. Clinicians often rely on the characteristic yellow tint of the sclera to detect jaundice, but this method is subjective and varies significantly among caregivers. An invasive blood test is usually needed for confirmation. This study will collect images of participants' eyes alongside their existing blood bilirubin level results to develop a mathematical model for categorising the severity of jaundice based on these images. We believe this approach can provide a quick, painless and non-invasive alternative for assessing jaundice.
