Research summary
In response to the recruitment and retention issues being experienced in General Practice in part of Scotland the General Medical Services (GMS) contract 20181 aims to provide a range of supports to General Practitioners (GPs) to both mitigate their financial risks and reduce their workload. Included within in it is the development of a wider a Primary Care Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) employed via the 31 Health & Social Care Partnerships (HSCPs), who will take over tasks traditionally undertaken by GPs such as medicines management, home visits etc allowing them to refocus as “expert medical generalists”.
The priorities for implementation for the initial 3 years of the contract were outlined in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)2 which focussed on the key members required for the multi-disciplinary team and the 5 main areas of greatest need. One of the areas identified involved medicines management with pharmacists and pharmacy technicians identified as key members of the team. As part of the new contract the concept of core and additional Pharmacotherapy Services were introduced.Across Scotland effort has been concentrated on the delivery of Level one services, however there is pockets of Level two and three delivery although the current volume of activity is unknown. In addition, it is unknown how delivery of Level two and three services is experienced by patients. The purpose of this research is to look at the range and level of activity in Levels two and three and explore some patient experiences.REC name
