  • Research summary

The study objectives will be to assess if there is any statistical difference between the degrees measured clinically and the degrees measured in the pictures provided by the participants in the interphalangeal joint (IPJ) of the thumb.

Our study is a prospective observational analytical study.

60 patients will be selected from the clinic list at Mid Essex Hospital Service NHS Trust. Particpants must be >18 years old, male and female will both be included.

The study will start once approved by a research ethics comittee and approval received from the Research and Development department of Mid Essex Hospital Trust. The study will close once the number of participants is reached.

Consent will be obtained from each participant. A Participant Information Sheet explaining the projections that are required to meassure the IPJ in the thumb will be provided to each participant. Included in the PIS will be a leaflet demonstrating the correct photographs which they will need to take and submit to the clinician. A clinician (member of the research team) will discuss the study with participants and obtain signed consent. The photographs provided by the patients will be viewed and the clinician will measure the extension and flexion degrees during their clínic appointment. All the participants will be examined by the same criteria.

Variables to be measured will be:
Maximum active extension and flexion of the IPJ of the thumb, clinically.
Maximum active extension and flexion of the IPJ of the thumb in the lateral projection of the thumb, assessed using photographs provided by the participant.

Our study aim is to assess if there is a correlation between the degrees measured clinically and those in the photographs .

The angles both on the patient and on the photographs will be assessed by two investigators independently. This will enable assessment of inter observer errors or variance.
