  • Research summary

The Patient Concerns Inventory (PCI) is a relatively short questionnaire, comprising a list of potential patient-focussed concerns from which patients identify items that they would like to discuss in their clinical appointment with a consultant. This supports the patient in identifying their concerns and getting help with these from the doctor. PCIs have been used in a number of areas, but have not been used with patients within gerontology departments. This research project would establish and test 3 draft PCI questionnaires for use with patients in hospital gerontology departments suffering from 3 types of conditions – falls, problems related to gastroenterology, or neurology/neuropsychiatry. Three draft PCIs would be produced using literature reviews, professional and clinical opinion, and 2 focus groups for up to 5 patients with each type of condition. These will be pilot-trialled on 20 patients with each type of condition in gerontology outpatient clinics. In practice, the appropriate PCI is completed by the patient, with their carer if they choose, before the outpatient appointment, passed to the clinical professional, and used to focus that consultation on the patients concerns and the management of these. The PCI will be evaluated, using a post-consultation questionnaire, in terms of its usefulness to patients and doctors. After trial completion, the PCI will be amended by the research team to reflect previously unidentified patient generated items. This will complete the development of the ME-PCI, and the trial team expect a much larger study to be undertaken across multiple centres to establish the value of the approach at a national level, and also as a tool to support comprehensive, cross sectoral service provision and support for these patients.
