  • Research summary

Pregnant women in the UK who have a pre-existing serious health problem, such as cardiac disease (acquired or congenital) require input from relevant specialist teams of health professionals in addition to their midwife and obstetrician. This model of care is sometimes referred to as a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and is considered to reduce the risk of poor maternal or infant outcomes and enhance their longer-term health. Effective care requires input from maternity teams (ie. obstetricians, midwives) and specialist medical experts (ie cardiologists) but not much is known about the impact of different types of MDT models of care on the mother or baby in terms of their health or their experience of care.

This study will describe what models of MDT care are currently provided for pregnant and postnatal women with pre-existing or new onset cardiac disease in two NHS trusts and make a comparison between the two. It will explore current MDT working in both sites, identify what supports good team working and how health professionals and women, their partner/family/significant other are involved in decisions about care.

We will interview key health professionals about their experiences of providing the current MDT model of care in their hospital for women with cardiac disease. We hope to interview women, and if they agree together with their partner/family/significant other, to understand their experience of care and how it impacts on the health outcomes of mothers and their babies during and after birth. They will be identified by clinical staff involved in direct care and selected on the basis of an audit being completed regarding MDT care and outcomes.
