Research summary
People who carry the gene for Huntington’s disease (both pre-symptomatic and symptomatic) can experience low mood, anxiety and other psychological difficulties. However, no studies have investigated the potential of psychological therapies to help people with Huntington's disease with these difficulties. While medication might be effective for some people, it is not suitable for all and people with the disease have shown interest in the development of psychological approaches. This study would provide the first indication of whether mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, a therapeutic approach with an established evidence base, would be acceptable and useful for people with Huntington's who are experiencing psychological difficulties.
