Research summary
During pregnancy and birth, it can be common for women to feel anxious, stressed or not like themselves. These difficulties can affect up to one in five women and usually include anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and stress-related conditions. Such difficulties can make it hard for women and their families to cope, and although there are services available to help, not all women will access them. We want to understand why this is. We will ask women who are pregnant, or who have had a baby within the past two years to take part in our research to understand barriers and facilitators to accessing mental health care during this period. We then want to create a care pathway that will be more culturally tailored and will overcome the barriers identified. The study will be made up of three phases. Phase 1 will establish two PPIE groups; (1) group of pregnant or postpartum women who have experienced mental health difficulties who gave birth under Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, or those who received help from East London NHS Foundation Trust; (2) a group of health professional or stakeholders who have provided care to women with perinatal mental health difficulties and are currently working at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust or East London NHS Foundation Trust. Phase 2 will be to carry out interviews with 10 participants from each of the PPIE groups to understand their views on barriers and facilitators to accessing perinatal mental health care. Phase 3 wil carry out 5 groups sessions with each of the PPIE groups to design a new pathway informed by the findings from phase 2.
