Research summary
This is a secondary data analysis project involving the analysis of data collected from 34 maternity units, including 619 323 births between 1989 and 2007. The existing dataset has been anonymised at source for all data prior to being transferred to the researchers. This is the only existing nationally representative dataset for maternal obesity which includes the data required to analyse trends in maternal body mass index (BMI) and associations with the stage of pregnancy that women access antenatal care.
The project aims to explore the associations between maternal BMI and the stage of pregnancy that women access antenatal care in a UK population. This analysis will take into consideration other maternal characteristics which might have an impact on the stage of pregnancy that women access antenatal care. The following will be investigated:
• distributions of BMI and stage of pregnancy women access antenatal care in the sample population (descriptive analysis)
• investigate the association between BMI and stage of pregnancy that women access antenatal care (adjusted analysis taking into consideration other factors which might influence this association, e.g. parity, maternal age and ethnic group)REC name
