Research summary
Many children with Down syndrome snore and sometimes briefly block their airway at night. This is called obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The aim of this study is analyse the association between OSA, neuroinflammation and cognitive development in children with Downs syndrome. This will be studied by comparing severity of OSA and cognitive development with markers of systemic and neuro-inflammation, via blood and urine samples. We will also study a novel potential marker of OSA severity namely the thickness of the retinal nerve cell layer, through non-invasive optical scans.
