  • Research summary

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a common cause of cardiovascular death in the UK. The only treatment for AAA is surgical repair, which can be done either with open surgery (OAR) or endovascular minimally invasive surgery, which is commonly referred to as EVAR. Both types of repair can impact on kidney function and cause acute kidney injury (AKI). Long-term (chronic) damage to the kidneys is also common after these types of surgery. However, the exact number of patients that develop AKI and chronic kidney disease after EVAR or OAR is not known and most importantly, the impact of these adverse events on death rates and morbidity after surgery is unclear. In this study we will collect data from 6 centres in the UK regarding the incidence of AKI after EVAR or OAR and assess their effect on overall kidney function as well as mortality/morbidity.
