  • Research summary

COPD often coexists with a number of conditions .Epidemiologic studies have shown that comorbidities often have a significant impact on vital prognosis. Likewise, little is known about the impact of having COPD on the comorbidities, their symptoms and prognosis. In addition, there is little data on adherence to medication for COPD and comorbidities. Some comorbidities occur much more frequent in COPD than others, either because of common risk factors, shared pathogenetic pathways, or because one disease acting as a risk factor for another .
The Salford Integrated Record (SIR) database collects real-time information recorded in all general practices in Salford , UK, and can link primary and secondary care with prescription information at the patient-level. If needed, it can also link to other databases through North West e Health to provide an even more comprehensive, electronic medical record database.
    Aims and Objectives:
    1. Identify and describe the COPD population in Salford using shared electronic registers between primary and secondary care
    2. Find out the patterns of selected comorbidities in this population,
    3. Explore outcomes of having COPD with selected comorbidities; i.e., heart failure and ischemic heart disease, focusing on exacerbations, all cause hospitalisations and mortality. This will specifically include analyses comparing COPD with and without these two comorbidities
    4. Explore the potential relationship in between heart failure and ischemic heart disease and COPD phenotypes
    5. Study the potential adverse effects of selected classes of drugs on COPD outcomes
All data will be anonymised prior to being provided to the research team.
