Research summary
Oesophageal (food-tube) cancer (OC) survival has dramatically increased in the last half century. Research focus has shifted investigating OC survivors to prolong survival and improve health-related quality of life (HRQL). The gut microbiome, defined as the totality of microbes that are present in the gastrointestinal tract (from mouth to anus) has been at the centre of research interest, previously linked to survival and HRQL in other diseases. The project will collect saliva, stool, blood, urine, and breath in OC survivors and aim to investigate underlying microbiome biological pathways to identify novel diagnostic tests and new treatments for this patient group.
