Research summary
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic heart condition that causes abnormal thickening of the heart muscle and can lead to various complications, including atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is an irregular and often rapid heartbeat that increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. It is much more common in people with HCM, and current treatments are often less effective in this group, leaving a pressing need to better understand the underlying causes of AF in HCM and develop improved therapies.
This study focuses on investigating how changes in the electrical and structural properties of the atria—the upper chambers of the heart—promote the development of AF in HCM patients. During AF ablation procedures (a treatment for AF), precise electrophysiological measurements will be taken to assess how the atria’s electrical activity differs in people with HCM. These measurements will provide valuable insights into the electrical disturbances that make the heart more prone to irregular rhythms.
In addition, advanced atrial MRI imaging will be used to study structural changes in the atria, such as thickening of the atrial walls and scarring (fibrosis). These imaging data will be integrated into computational models of the atria to simulate AF and test different ablation strategies virtually. By doing so, the study aims to identify the most effective ways to disrupt abnormal electrical activity and improve outcomes for HCM patients undergoing AF treatment.
This research has the potential to improve our understanding of AF in HCM, guide the development of personalized treatment strategies, and ultimately reduce the burden of AF in this high-risk population.
