Research summary
Lay summary of study results:
This was a randomized clinical study designed to compare the effectiveness of manual and powered toothbrushes in children undergoing fixed brace treatment. We assessed a number of cleaning effectiveness measures, which included plaque [food debris], gum health and bleeding on probing the gums before brace placement and up to 1-year into brace treatment. No difference was observed in any of these measures, between the manual and powered toothbrushes. However, in both groups a worsening of the gum health was observed following brace fitting and highlighted the need for greater patient support and monitoring.REC name
