Research summary
This is a mixed methods research and aims to gather expert perspectives about the feasibility of integrating Buddhist mantra-based meditation with a narrative multi-family group, as well as evaluate the effectiveness of such an integrated approach with either a clinical or non-clinical population. The three main objectives are:
1. To compare the Buddhist and systemic conceptualizations of mental healing.
2. To examine the recitation of a Buddhist mantra as a form of mindfulness practice.
3. To implement and evaluate the use of a Buddhist mantra in an online narrative multi-family group with families awaiting treatment at the Bromley CAMHS.REC approval is sought for objective 3 for evaluating the piloting of an eight-week mNOWm (mantra-based meditation narrative outsider witness multi-family) online group with 30 family units and another 30 as a control group, and administering pre and post group self-report outcome measures as well as conducting a focus group discussions with the 30 families after they complete the eight-week programme. These families will be recruited from the over 300 service users awaiting treatment from Bromley CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service), Oxleas NHS (National Health Service) Foundation Trust, UK.
The scope of time for this research is set to be two years from August 2022 to July 2024.
