• Data collection arrangements

  The MFT Biobank stores tissue samples surplus to clinical requirements from patients that have been diagnosed with a wide range of diseases. Solid tissue samples are collected from the surgical resection specimen taken as part of the patient's routine clinical care. Tissue samples are stored as formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) blocks and frozen tissue. Where appropriate, a small sample of adjacent normal tissue is collected from the surgical resection to allow direct comparison. If requested DNA, RNA and proteins can be extracted.

  Tissue types collected are wide-ranging and include liver, kidney, uterus, ovary, prostate, lower gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular and vascular.

  In addition to solid tissue the Biobank also collects a wide range of body fluids (for example blood, peritoneal fluid) and bodily waste (for example urine). Processed derivatives in the form of serum, plasma are also stored.

  Relevant clinical and demographic data will be collected and linked to each sample eg. histological subtype, treatment history and survival outcomes.

  All samples/data are collected with the full informed consent of the donor. Patients are given the opportunity to retract their consent at any time following their initial recruitment.

• Research programme

  The Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) is a partnership between The University of Manchester and five NHS Organisations including MFT, uniting leading healthcare providers with world-class academics and researchers. Through extensive local, national and global collaborations, MAHSC is becoming a major biomedical and health hub, providing clinical and research leadership and helping healthcare organisations to reap the benefits of research and innovation to drive improvements in care. As part of this, the MFT Biobank's aim is to help researchers by providing access to large numbers of tissue, urine and blood samples from people with many types of disease. A ‘core’ repository of biomaterials is being collected/used with particular emphasis on the following disease areas: • Cancer • Inflammation and repair • Cardiovascular disease • Women's health The Biobank will support projects from all sections of the biomedical research community. Researchers from academic, charitable and commercial organisations will be able to apply for access to samples by submitting a project proposal. All projects will require approval by the Biobank Science and Ethics Advisory Board. This will ensure that the resource is used in the best interests of the research community and the tissue donors.
